Stondon means ‘stone hill` (a low gravel hill was known as a ‘down`)

Massey is derived from Serlo de Marci, a Norman knight who lived in nearby Ongar, holding a manor there back in the Middle Ages.

It is a historic village originating with a Saxon settlement, established near to the site of the 12th Century church of St Peter`s & St Paul`s

The Stondon Massey of 2019 is still a small rural parish which falls within Brentwood Borough and has a population of just circa 730.
