THE AREA - ARDLEIGH GREEN

A well-to-do neighbourhood which is often regarded as the northernmost part of Hornchurch, although some link it with Gidea Park or even Upminster too.

Ardleigh Green was first recorded as Hadley (indicating a heathland clearing) in the 14th century, evolving through Hadley Green and Hardley Green in the 18th Century and Eardley Green in the 19th Century, before developing into Ardleigh Green in the early 20th Century.

The area blossomed after the opening of Squirrel`s Heath (now Gidea Park) station in 1910, with the area heavily developed in the 1930`s and the now `Outstanding` OFSTED rated primary School, opened in 1933.

A row of 1930`s shops run opposite each other on the main Ardleigh Green Road and include a Tesco Express and several takeaways. Along the same stretch is `The Ardleigh`, a popular Gastropub which does weekday meals as well as a Sunday roast. There is also a Doctors and Dental surgery too.
